What does the oxygen O2 Sensor do: It is the primary measurement device for the fuel control computer in your car to know if the engine is too rich or too lean. The O2 sensor is active anytime it is hot enough, but the computer only uses this information in the closed loop mode. Closed loop is the operating mode where all engine control sensors including the Oxygen sensor are used to get best fuel economy, lowest emissions, and good power. If the Oxygen sensor will be faulty, the fuel economy and emissions will change to the bad side and the engine will start fine but on idle it will be rough can even shut down and stop working.
Oxygen sensor diagnosis: You can plug in a sensor diagnosis tool and the the voltage its working. It must change really often and fast, if it does that really slow and not good enough. Then the sensor is old or getting old and started to be lazy and it needs to be replaced by the same new one. The is alot od different types of sensors and wirings. So you should be sure they are the same. Oxygen sensors needs to be changed at around 80000km on the car as by that time they are getting old, some sensors can even last a life time of the car but it depends how good is the engine and if it had any problems before.
